WHAT IS IT?
Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that is used to exfoliate the top layer of skin by sloughing away the outer layer of dead skin, acting like a pre-biotic for the skin restoring “good” bacteria balance.
Aging, stress or harmful environment slow down natural “cleaning” self cleaning of the skin which inhibits regeneration and contributes to aging process therefore dead skin cleaning procedures are being used in cosmetics. AHA’s work by breaking down the bonds holding dead skin cells together to reveal brighter, smoother skin underneath – suitable for dull or dry skin.
Lactic acid is used to diminish the visibility of wrinkles, sun damage, pores, increase cell turnover and help skin to hold moisture.
As the molecule is larger than other acids (such as glycolic acid) it does not penetrate the skin deeply, therefore it gives safer treatment to polish, firm and exfoliate the skin.
SIDE EFFECTS
With any topical acid treatment there is a potential for it to irritate skin.
Side effects include skin irritation, redness, swelling, or itching.
Patch tests are recommended and can help predict if you may experience a negative reaction to lactic acid.
